FRESNO, CA — Fresno-area education officials celebrated Friday as residents participated in a community school-supply drive, continuing America’s innovative system under which pencils, notebooks, calculators, and backpacks are periodically crowdsourced from people walking out of Target.
The ABC30 Back to School Supply Drive collected supplies at the Zimmerman Boys & Girls Club for children throughout Fresno County.
Organizers sought backpacks, notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, rulers, calculators, and other classroom essentials.
Education policy analysts praised the efficiency of the arrangement.
“Rather than burdening institutions with the cumbersome responsibility of ensuring every child has basic learning materials,” said one analyst, “we’ve streamlined the process by asking Linda from accounting to buy an extra box of Crayolas.”
Fresno residents responded generously, arriving throughout the day with supplies for children preparing to return to school.
Officials stressed that even modest donations could make a meaningful difference.
A single $12 backpack, for example, can reportedly hold three notebooks, a pencil case, two folders, an increasingly complicated school-issued Chromebook, and approximately 47 separate notices parents will later discover crushed beneath a granola-bar wrapper.
Local children expressed appreciation for the donations and excitement about beginning another school year.
At press time, one donated calculator was reportedly being used to determine how a nation that spends hundreds of billions of dollars annually on education still somehow requires a television station to organize a pencil drive.
