FRESNO, CA — Fresno County formally closed its regular candidate-filing period Friday after giving residents nearly four weeks to decide whether they possessed the confidence necessary to look at local government and conclude, “Yeah, I could probably do that.”
The filing period for offices appearing in the November 3 election ran from July 13 through August 7.
Election officials confirmed that the process involved prospective candidates completing paperwork rather than the more traditional Fresno qualification process of becoming angry during a neighborhood Facebook discussion and announcing plans to run for office.
“Public service requires commitment, judgment, and leadership,” said one election official. “But step one is remembering the filing deadline.”
Under election rules, filing may continue through August 12 for certain offices if an eligible incumbent does not file for reelection.
Political scientists described this as the governmental equivalent of reposting a job opening after the current employee quietly leaves the company Slack.
Candidates now face several months of campaigning, fundraising, public appearances, questionnaires, lawn signs, endorsements, and explaining to relatives exactly which office they are running for.
Voters, meanwhile, will begin the traditional process of ignoring almost all of this until approximately 8:47 p.m. the night before Election Day.
