FRESNO, CA — Concluding that several decades of forcing municipal employees to personally observe Fresno infrastructure may constitute cruel and unusual punishment, city officials heard a presentation Thursday on using artificial intelligence to analyze street-level imagery for Code Enforcement and Public Works.
The technology, presented by Placemetry, would allow computers to examine images of neighborhoods and infrastructure and identify conditions requiring attention.
City leaders praised the proposal as an important technological advance.
“For years, we’ve relied on residents to tell us things like ‘there’s a gigantic pothole outside my house,’” explained one city official. “Artificial intelligence could someday independently discover that there is, in fact, a gigantic pothole outside their house.”
Engineers said the system could potentially recognize deteriorating pavement, property conditions, infrastructure problems, and other abnormalities from street imagery.
The most difficult stage of development reportedly involves teaching the algorithm the difference between a municipal code violation and something Fresno residents have simply stopped noticing.
Early testing allegedly required programmers to repeatedly reassure the computer that faded lane markings were not an image-rendering error and that several objects classified as “road craters” were technically still part of the roadway.
Officials stressed that AI would supplement human decision-making rather than replace city employees.
At press time, however, the artificial intelligence had completed its first visual survey of Fresno and immediately asked whether it could transfer to Clovis.
